Daron Murphy

After playing in various indie rock bands throughout the '90s as a singer and guitarist, Daron Murphy laid down his guitar for a while and started experimenting with synthesizers and keyboards. He had always been a 'vintage snob', so he started off with old analog synths like the Arp Axxe, Realistic MG-1 (by Moog) and his favorite, the Roland Jupiter 4. "I just like the simplicity, the personality and the warm, organic tone."

While touring with Laura Dawn (his wife) and the band in 2001 to promote her album on Extasy Records, they also started the humorous glam rock/disco band called Rene Risque and the Art Lovers. Moby, who was friends with Laura, started coming to see their shows. He became a fan, and made some live guest appearances. When it was time for Moby to make his album, Hotel, he enlisted Laura as singer and asked Daron to come on his 2005 world tour to play guitar, bass, and harmonica.

Now, back home in Brooklyn, Daron is writing and recording new songs in his small home studio. The music he's working on now is a hybrid of electronic disco and glam rock. It will be released under the name "Dolce" (his character from Rene Risque) and features Laura and Moby. You can also expect a remix by Daron of Moby's upcoming single, "New York, New York," which features Debbie Harry of Blondie on vocals.

Daron Murphy and FabFilter

Daron mostly uses FabFilter Twin and FabFilter Volcano, which he first read about in Future Music Magazine. "I like them because they have some of the best sounding filters I have ever heard in the software domain."

"One of my big frustrations has always been that soft synths sound sterile and lifeless. FabFilter Twin however, has got the richness and warmth of analog synths (great, smooth filters, full, musical sound) but has the features and flexibility of a modern synth. There are only a couple of soft synths that inspire me and FabFilter Twin is one of them..."

"I also like it because it's intuitive and easy to use. One thing I've learned from working with Moby is that it's often best not to fuss over sounds. If you get lost in tweaking it can slow down your creativity. I also love how the sounds seem to bridge the sonic gap between vintage and modern. Like filtering real drum sounds through Volcano to give them a more synthesized/drum machine hybrid type of sound."
