Robert L. Smith

Robert L. Smith is an Oscar winning, Grammy and Emmy nominated producer/engineer/mixer spanning more than 30 years.

"I started recording when I was 11 years old (still have the mics!), moved onto playing bass guitar and DJing. I'd like to especially thank my Mom, for not being mad as I blew up guitar amplifiers in the basement all those years ago.".

Recent clients of note include Lady Gaga, U2, The Ting Tings, Chaka Khan, Glee, Placido Domingo, Baz Luhrmann, Alice Cooper and Duran Duran.

Robert L. Smith and FabFilter

"I first heard about FabFilter in a review of the Pro-DS plugin in TapeOp from a few years ago. Loved it the first time, and its been on every mix since. Of course, I had to have everything else you build, so I was happy to grab them all. The best thing about FabFIlter products is they get away from the usual hardware emulations that so many others focus on. The requirements of my job have evolved, and I need tools that evolve with me. What do I mean by that? Every plug in has the controls you would expect, and its easy to dial in a sound quickly. At the same time, recordings show up with every level of quality, and I often need something other than the 'old-standbys' to whip a sound into shape. This is where FabFilter excels."

"Some examples would be the 'Lookahead' features in Pro-DS, G, L and MB, the EQ Match in Pro-Q2, the filters and modulation in Timeless 2 and the endless inspiration provided by Saturn and Volcano. Speaking of inspiration, if I'm ever stuck on what to do with a sound, I like to use a 'wrong' preset. Such as "Let's try 'MindExpansion' from Volcano on this acoustic guitar...". The results can be insane, but sometimes just the right level of insanity. ;-)"
